Made for This Cast: Why We Create Our Scripts from Scratch
How custom-made theatre empowers every child on stage
When you write your own theatre scripts, you’re not just telling a story—you’re writing with your performers in mind. That’s the beauty of original theatre. And it’s exactly why I choose to script our productions from scratch.
In many traditional shows, casting feels like a jigsaw puzzle: trying to fit a group of young people into a script written for someone else’s ensemble, from another time, with roles that are often wildly unequal.
But in our group, we flip that process on its head…
We build the script around the cast—not the other way around.
When I sit down to write, I don’t start with a pre-set list of lead roles and background parts.
I start with a blank page and a big question:
“How can I make sure every child in this cast has a part they can be proud of?”
That question leads everything:
Dialogue is spread evenly.
Every character gets a moment to shine.
Scenes are written to balance stage time, not just drama.
Ensemble scenes are crafted to celebrate the group, not just the individual.

It’s not just about fairness. It’s about artistry.
When each child is genuinely involved in the storytelling, something amazing happens: the whole production feels more alive. More invested. More collaborative. The cast doesn’t just memorize lines—they own the story.
I’ve seen children who thought they were “just chorus kids” suddenly realize they are the story. That realization changes everything—from how they perform to how they carry themselves in and out of rehearsals.

And for our older performers…
From age 11, our young actors step into licensed musical theatre productions, where they experience more formal casting while still being supported in a respectful, inclusive environment. By then, they’ve learned what it means to be part of a true ensemble—and they bring that understanding with them into every role, big or small.
Original scripts aren’t the easiest route. They take time, imagination, and constant adaptation. But they allow us to create something truly unique—for this cast, in this moment, with their voices and their hearts at the center.
